After the French Revolution, the traditional areas of the national minorities in French border areas were broken up and changed,as a result, their names disappeared for a long time.By the third Republic, minority languages had almost disappeared under the dominant and exclusive authority of French. In a nationwide revolt against the Paris authority, the French government finally launched decentralization reforms in the 1980s.Minority areas, along with the rest of the country, thus gained the limited right of"self-management"recognized by the Constitution.
