摘要
从识解理论视角出发,探讨理雅各的《大学》英译本中蕴含的概念隐喻及其英译研究,发现:(1)基于认知识解理论,即详略度、辖域、凸显和视角四个维度,译者对概念隐喻所采取的英译策略不同,语言表达式也不尽相同;(2)理雅各对《大学》中含有的结构隐喻、空间隐喻和实体隐喻三种概念隐喻类别多数采取直译、意译和增益法的翻译策略,尽可能忠实原文;(3)隐喻翻译策略与译者理雅各本身采取的视角和凸显等有关。基于认知识解理论探讨理雅各《大学》英译本中的隐喻英译,不仅能为解读概念隐喻的英译提供合理的认知理据,还能为儒家经典著作的翻译提供新的认知视角,有利于促进儒家经典著作翻译事业的进步。
This essay explores conceptual metaphors and their English translations in The Great Learning from the perspective of cognitive construal theory and findings indicate that:1)based on the cognitive construal theory,that is,the four dimensions of specificity,domain,prominence and perspective,translation strategies adopted by James Legge are different and linguistic expressions of conceptual metaphor translations are thus different;2)James Legge adopts literal translation,literary translation and amplification the most to translate these three types of conceptual metaphors in The Great Learning:structural metaphor,spatial metaphor and substance metaphor,aiming to be loyal to the source text as much as possible;3)metaphorical translation strategies are related to perspective and prominence etc adopted by translators themselves.Based on the cognitive construal theory,this paper discusses the English translations of conceptual metaphors in James Legge’s The Great Learning,which can not only provide readers with reasonable cognitive interpretation of English translations of conceptual metaphors,but also provide a new perspective for the translation of the Confucian classics,which helps to promote the translation of the Confucian classics.
