摘要
何炳棣先生(1917—2012)出版于1962年的英文著作《明清社会史论》,2013年由台湾东吴大学的徐泓教授翻译成中文在台出版;2019年下半年,北京中华书局作为《何炳棣著作集》之一引进推出简体字本,大大便利了国内读者。该书运用计量统计的方法,通过对当时所能搜求到的近一万五千名进士,两万多名贡生、举人的进士登科录及乡试、会试同年齿录进行统计分析,详细考察其家族三代履历,分析科举制度对应考者向上和向下社会流动的概况,取得了令人信服的结论。近年来对何先生此书的争议较多,梳理清楚《明清社会史论》方法论源流情况,或有助于进一步加深对该书的理论探讨。
Ping-Ti Ho’s The Ladder of Success in Imperial China:Aspects of Social Mobility,1368-1911,first published in 1962 in English edition,was translated into Chinese by Professor Xu Hong of Taiwan Soochow University and published in Taiwan in 2013.Beijing Zhonghua Book Company introduced it in simplified Chinese edition in the second half of 2019,as one of the collected works of Ping-Ti Ho.It facilitated readers to learn about the thoughts of Mr.Ho.This book used quantitative statistics to analyze the data recorded in Jinshi Enrollment Records and Records of the Same Year about 15000 Jinshi and 20000 Gongsheng and Juren.Mr.Ho researched three generations curriculum vitae of those people,found out the general situation of social mobility under the Imperial Examination System.His research result was received by many scholars,but gave rise to bitter disputes these days.If we figure out the source of research method in this book,it may help us to move forward a single step in theoretically discussing this masterwork.
