The digital twin is a dynamic virtual representation of a real ship, which uses comprehensive knowledge from sensor data and physical models to simulate the ship’s operating state. This paper proposes a digital twin framework based on a virtual reality system.Firstly, the real sea databases and hydrodynamic databases are developed to ensure the consistency of the marine environment and ship motion characteristics with physical entities. Then the virtual ships are generated based on both of the shipboard sensor data and physical models. Finally, the real sea environment and the virtual ships are rendered in a simulator. The sensor-driven virtual ship can be used for real-time monitoring of the navigation status, and the prediction results of the physical model can be integrated with the knowledge of operation limit under severe weather to provide early warning information. In addition,an example of voyages reproduction analysis based on the framework is shown, where the control input is consistent with the actual ship sensors. The results show that the physical model can provide effective prediction information. The proposed framework could enhance the situational awareness of intelligent ships.
