One of the leading British playwrights, for nearly half a century Caryl Churchill’s recent plays tend to unveil anthropocentric utopian illusions through dramatic displays of death, plague, famine, depression and other predicaments of survival, establishing an imagined ideal world through her dystopian style. This article discusses Churchill’s probe into an intimate community of shared destiny from three aspects:medial penetration,a spiritual wasteland, and a deathly fatalism. Her dramatic creation in recent years not only represents her artistic and philosophical thinking, but also reflects this public intellectual’s dialectic vision of the human community.
