Shaoyao in The Book of Songs·Zhen Wei should be a wild Chinese peony flower that grows on the banks of Zhen Wei,not an unknown herb or seasoning.Man and woman presented each other with Shaoyao at parting time, and Shaoyao, which is homophonic with the word"妁"(sound as shuo in Chinese),conveys the desire of courtship to each other like a matchmaker. So the connotation of the behavior of"giving Shaoyao"is that they are willing to marry each other as husband and wife.In the poem, the man and the woman exchanged peony, which seems to be a manifestation of simple love.In fact, their behavior has already violated the etiquette and is a portrayal of the collapse of ritual and music. Therefore, the main theme of Zhen Wei should be a satire of social chaos, and its deep meaning is correcting that bad social status.
