Bars and ancient towns are seemingly contradictory because they symbolize modern and traditional elements. However,in recent years, the growth of bar streets in China’s ancient towns has gradually become a recognized tourism development model. It is necessary to investigate why such seemingly contradictory features develop in a harmonious manner and how tourists experience such two combined attractions.By applying the theory of embodied experience, this paper examines how tourists perceive the relationship between bars and ancient towns through an analysis of their experience at such places. This research undertook a case study of the bar street in Fenghuang Ancient Town.Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and local observations. The study made the following findings.First,in previous studies, bars and ancient towns have been identified as a"text"or"stage":the bar represents Western city culture and the ancient town embodies traditional Chinese culture;thus, they are perceived as seemingly contradictory elements. However, tourists experience both bars and ancient towns from the perspective of their embodied experience:they place their bodies in a particular place.Their perceptions of bars and ancient towns are affected by their physical presence there, their situation, and their cognition. The embodied experience of tourists in bars and ancient towns are intrinsically consistent and complementary. For example, tourists go to an ancient town to spend time during the day;the bar provides a place for tourists to rest and relax. From a bodily perspective, tourists are relaxed in both bars and ancient towns:that reflects intrinsic consistency.Furthermore, the bar in the evening enriches the tourists’experience in the ancient town:such experience adds to the tourists’personal experience, which is fundamentally connected with their perceptions of the ancient town.Accordingly, tourists are able to accept the combination of bars and ancient towns as an attraction.Second, research on the embodied experience of tourists
