Lu Shusheng, a native of Songjiang, was Minister of Rites in the Jiajing period of Ming dynasty and was much admired by the literati class of his time for his high prestige and longevity. Lu’s portrait was painted while he was still alive. The earliest existing portrait of him, a hanging scroll showing Lu and his friend monk Beichan, was painted by Ye Shifang on Lu’s 90 th birthday. Later, the image of Lu was copied in Portrait of Lu Shusheng in the album Villagers of Songjiang by Xu Zhang, a painter from Songjiang in the early Qing dynasty. This image was carved on stone in the late Qing. The album leaf Portrait of Lu Shusheng in the Shanghai Museum, painted by an anonymous artist in the Qing dynasty, is probably a transition between painting and stone carving. The current author studies the existing portraits of Lu Shusheng and expounds the image relationships between them from the aspects of face, clothing, utensils, etc. so as to deepen understanding of the function of celebrity portrait. The nature of the album leaf Portrait of Lu Shusheng is identified as well.
