According to the local Chronicles of the Yangtze river delta region during Ming and Qing dynasties,a filial Daughter who gave her life to a tiger in order to save her parents left behind an image that embodied female virtue. However, after careful examination,we find that although the state-dominated discourse agreed with this filial piety, the boundary of female filial piety extended because the male-dominated ruling class placed excessive expectations for a model woman. This paper reviews relevant literature and mainly analyzes the number, types and portraits of Filial Daughters who met tigers in order to identify the purpose and decode the meaning of this type of texts from a gender perspective. It points out that the tiger as the fierce and spiritual"King of Beasts in the Mountains"was only used as a good way to test women’s virtue. The act of sacrificing her life for her parents was not only endowed with sense of morality and utilitarianism, but also used to transfer filial piety as loyalty, chastity or even filial piety itself. Women had to rely on their performance of their roles in the family to gain moral affirmation.
