Using the defeated Japanese society as the backdrop to An Artist of the Floating World,Kazuo Ishiguro constructs the novel via the identity problems of the protagonist. This paper holds that the protagonist Onokazu’s identity anxiety arose from the fierce collision between the discourse of"self-choice"and"other authority". He constantly chose between"sense of self"and"moral sense"in the course of identity conversion, while in the process of identity identification,he had both the characteristics of"self-consciousness limitation"and"identity reflection passivity". Starting from the three perspectives of identity anxiety, identity conversion and identity identification, this paper attempts to make a detailed analysis of the hidden identity crisis of the character under the narrative surface of the novel,so as to further explore the profound philosophy and spiritual value contained it.
