Well over a decade after the publication of Ruth Rogaski's Hygienic Modernity:Meanings of Health and Disease in Treaty-Port China,the topic of hygiene in Republican China continues to fascinates scholars.Chieko Nakajima's book,which details the elaboration of a nascent hygienic regime in early twentieth-century Shanghai,is a welcome addition to the existing scholarship in this field.
