A group of portraits with no inscriptions in the "Collection of Twelve Portraits in the Ming Dynasty" in Nanjing Museum are supposed to be one of the peaks of Chinese realistic painting. With regard to the painting style of this collection, most modern and contemporary scholars prefer to think that it is influenced by the Western painting. However, compared with the Western holy image painting, the collection is believed to fall into the local painting tradition of China, and is influenced by the highly-realistic spirit of landscape painting and flower and bird painting in the Song Dynasty.
