摘要
《英华仙尼华四杂字文》是一本1846年出版于浙江定海的吴语方言英汉词汇集,是目前所见的最早的“洋泾浜英语”读本。其词汇分有72门,共计3193个,内容丰富。从文字看,这是一本包含中、英、印三种语言的奇书,书中的印度文为泰卢固文。从内容看,该书记载了定海古城的老地名、老行当、老物件,具有丰富的舟山海洋文化地域特色,其中大量与贸易相关的词汇亦反映近代定海商贸发展状况。该书的编撰,其根本原因是英国侵略军意图了解舟山当地民俗民情及政局情况,企图长期占领,这些都需要语言这一辅助工具。《英华仙尼华四杂字文》使当时初学英语的定海商人有了学习范本,促进了定海商帮文化的孕育。
A Manual for Youth and Students,published in Dinghai in 1846,is an English and Chinese vocabulary containing an easy introduction to the Chinese language,Ningbo dialect.It is also the earliest reading book of Pidgin English.Its vocabulary,rich in content,is divided into 72 categories,totaling 3193 words.In terms of the language,it is a strange book which contains three languages:Chinese,English and Indian.Seeing from the content,the book records the old place names,former trade and old objects of ancient Dinghai city,with rich characteristics of Zhoushan marine culture,among which a large number of trade-related words also reflect the development of business in Dinghai in modern times.The basic purpose of the book was to learn Chinese Ningbo dialect.As the British invaders needed supplies when staying in Zhoushan,they were also trying to understand the local customs and political situation in order for long-term occupation.A Manual for Youth and Students gave Dinghai businessmen a book for learning English at that time,thus promoting the formation of Dinghai business culture.
