Obesity is a growing epidemic worldwide. The most frequent cause leading to the development of obesity is an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure.Gut microbiota is an environmental factor involved in obesity and metabolic disorders which reveals that obese animal and human subjects present alterations in the composition of gut microbiota.Recent studies have shown that intestinal microbiota is a potential determinant of obesity.Evidence has so far demonstrated that gut microbiota, which influences whole-body metabolisms by affecting energy balance, inflammation and gut barrier function, can alter body weight. In the meantime, emerging evidence reveals that species of intestinal commensal bacteria play an important role in the treatment of obesity. Therefore targeting gut microbiota provides an effective treatment and prevention for obesity. However, the available data in this field remain limited. This review summarizes cutting-edge research on probiotics in treatment for obesity, existing issues in treatment with probiotics, and the future prospect of probiotics.
