The epigraphy was well developed in Qing Dynasty, under the influence of which, the works of local chronicles began to record stone carving documents. The first book of chorography documents of Sui,Tang and Five Dynasties carved on stones was Yangzhou Government Local Records in Yongzheng Dynasty, and then gradually more people participated in it.People in Qing Dynasty made outstanding academic achievements and great contributions in sorting out and studying the stone carving documents of Sui and Tang Dynasties and the Five Dynasties in Yangzhou, mainly in the following five aspects:they protected local historical materials, which was a supplement of official history;they studied the history and geography of Yangzhou, correcting the misstatement;they widened the academic horizon and renewed the historical concept;friends made discussion and encouraged each other to promote academic development;they expanded the scope of academic research and provided clues for literature examination. However, there are also obvious limitations. Most of their studies focused on the interpretation of stone inscriptions, without forming an academic exploration in the modern sense.Secondly, some scholars collected and protected documents carved on stones out of curiosity and even vanity, not for academic research.Thirdly, there were some common-sense errors and repeated description.
