摘要
《女性的屈从地位》是约翰·斯图亚特·密尔在晚年思想成熟时期写就的一部重要作品,被视为“第一次世界大战以前女权运动的一本圣经”。自出版以来,这部女性主义思想巨著就在西方学界受到广泛关注,与耳熟能详的伍斯通克拉夫特、伍尔夫、波伏娃等女性主义思想家相比,密尔被誉为“西方哲学传统的第一个伟大激进女权主义者”。在《女性的屈从地位》中,他挑战维多利亚时期传统的女性观,在自由功利主义思想主导下认知女性和赋权女性,密尔女性主义思想的进步意义与时代局限值得关注。
The Subjection of Women is John Stuart Mill’s mature masterpiece composed in his late years and considered as“a Bible of Feminist Movement before WWI”.Ever since its publication,this great feminist work has received reviews of various kinds in the western world,both praising and criticizing as well.However,very limited articles were published to study on it in China with no less than 10 commentary articles.Mill was acclaimed as“the first great radical feminist in western philosophical tradition”together with other female philosophers as Mary Wollstonecraft,Virginia Woolf and Simone de Bourvoir.This study explores his challenge to the Victorian concept on women,his conceptualization and empowerment of women.Furthermore,the critical reviews from both his contemporaries and the modern feminists will be given to elaborate the strengths and limits of his feminist thoughts.
