This article examines the two plot lines in Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South that deal with the idea of justice. In order to get higher wages, the workers organize a strike;the sailors stage a mutiny against the tyranny of the captain. The strike constitutes the major line of narrative while the mutiny, because it is violent and bloody in the public imagination, only occupies a marginalized narrative space. The two lines echo and interpret each other.Margaret's decision to help his brother Frederick to flee from England and to tell lies to the police can be interpreted as a continuation of her brother's violent fight for justice.
