“Eastern Europe”is a highly unstable term.Culturally,Eastern Europe refers to the region between Central Europe and Western Asia, influenced by Byzantium,Orthodox and the Ottomans.Politically,it was coined by some scholars during the Cold War to refer to the Eastern Bloc, which includes countries that historically and geographically belong to Central Europe. After the political upheaval of 1989,the“return to Europe”saw countries formerly known as“Eastern Europe”abandon their ideological and derogatory titles and call themselves“Central and Eastern Europe”.Although“Central and Eastern Europe”is now a neutral geographical buzzword to describe the region, some researchers still use other alternative metaphors to refer to the region from different perspectives and for different purposes. This article attempts to trace the evolution of the“Eastern Europe”concept, sketching its historical, cultural and political connotations. There is no clear preference or conclusion at the end of the paper, but the plain fact that the concept of Eastern Europe is very historical, rich and complex. It flows and evolves continuously along with the historical process, and has the dual characteristic of both sadness and joy.
