The novel A Single Man focuses on the struggles of American gay men in specific cultural and gender contexts. By depicting the protagonist George’s suicidal attempt with his narrative language, author tries to reconcile the gender differences and reconstruct a more complete gay male image. With the analysis of the narrative discourse and content in the novel, this essay intend to explore the uniqueness and diversity of individual male homosexual identity, and reflects the ideal exploration of Christopher Isherwood’s gender and identity theme.
