Tianjin’s villages mostly sprang up in the Ming and Qing dynasties due to the opening of the Tianjin section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The particularity of these villages was that their formation and development were affected by the Canal. For example, their names were related to their locations to the canal, or army barracks or warehouses by the Canal. Most residents relied on canal shipping for a living until land carriage replaced the Canal as the main mode of transportation, causing rapid decline of villages along the canal and therefore seriously hindered the urbanization of Tianjin in modern times. This became a universal phenomenon for canalside towns.
