Chinese novels owed their elevation to the introduction of enlightenment discourse by elite intellectuals in the late Qing Dynasty when there arose simultaneously a literary 'recreative'concept subconsciously affected by the West. The concept--a literary trend of thought with modern aesthetic consciousness, was not only distinct from the 'zaidao' function of new novelists but also different from the recreational pleasure of traditional Chinese novels. It derived from a host of intellectuals in the late Qing Dynasty, who were either thwarted in 'narional civil examinations' or degenerated to the edge of social margin consciously or subconsciously. By making case study of some magazines, and of Wang Guo-wei and the Zhou brothers, this paper expounds on the occurrence and state of such a literary trend of thought.
