Paul Harding’s Pulitzer-winning novel Tinkers centers around the Crosby family’s illness and explores the ethical relationship between family members and patients. From the perspective of medical ethics, it can be found that the stigma brought by mental illness disrupts the original ethical order of families and leads to conflicts between families. The segregation system derived from stigma facilitates family members to evade their ethical responsibilities, but further intensifies the contradiction between family members and patients. To change this situation, family members need to adopt an empathetic attitude, understand and care for patients in daily life, help them reintegrate into the community, and repair the ethical relationship between them.
