Among the Three Kingdoms, the Sun-Wu regime had the highest circulation of currency. Archaeological excavations of the Three Kingdoms over the recent decades have discovered a large number of coins and remains of coin casting. An examination of the unearthed coins from the 30 tombs dated to the Sun-Wu period and the 22 tombs dated to the Six Dynasties reveals that the major circulated currency in Sun-Wu time were coins from the previous dynasty, particularly the wu-zhu coins of the Han dynasty, while coins cast by Sun-Wu and Shu-Han were also in circulation. Even after Sun Quan abolished the newly cast coins including da-quan-wu-bai and da-quan-dang-qian, the Su-Wu coins still had their presence, and appeared in tombs of the Eastern Jin time. The Sun-Wu coins took up a very small portion of all the coins in circulation, much lower than the coins cast by Shu-Han, a phenomenon called“Shu money used in Wu”. It is therefore argued that the statement made in the Book of Jin (Jinshu) and Comprehensive Institutions (Tongdian) that Sun-Wu coins were still used in Jiangdong area during the Eastern Jin time should be corrected.
