摘要
从霍妮的神经症理论入手,阐述了文化和环境对人格的重要影响,在此基础分析了小说中威尔赫姆的顺从型人格。指出威尔赫姆趋众的神经症需求与崇尚物质主义及个人主义价值观的美国社会格格不入;又因其神经症人格缺乏灵活性与适应性,迫使他盲目地执着于“趋众”这一神经症趋势,如此恶性循环,进一步加剧内心的矛盾与冲突,最终导致自我危机。
In light of Karen Horney’s neurosis theory,the thesis expounds the important influence of environment and culture on individual’s personality,and further analyzes Wilhelm’s compliant personality in Seize the Day.It points out that Wilhelm’s neurotic needs based on his compliant personality are incompatible with the American society which advocates materialism and individualism values.And the lack of flexibility and adaptability in his neurotic personality compels Wilhelm to obsessively persist in the dominant tendency of moving-toward people.Such a vicious circle further aggravated Wilhelm’s inner contradictions and conflicts,and ultimately led to his self-crisis.
