A reciprocal influence could be seen in the development of the Chinese and the Western dance. The contemporary Chinese dance looks highly upon narration and realism, just as the Western dance before the 20th century considered art as an imitation, while the abstract expressionism of the Western dance after the 20th century shares similarities with the ancient Chinese dance that emphasizes the abstract expression of emotion. This indicates that expressionism and representationalism are essential in the art of dance, and they often overlap with each other in practice, which may benefit the development of the Chinese dance.
