The well J15 is the 15 th ancient well found in Grand Bao’en Temple Heritage Site in Nanjing. Situated on the northern part of the Site, J15 is a brick-laid water well of the Ming dynasty which was excavated by Nanjing Municipal Institute of Archaeology in June 2014. It was part of the important royal Buddhist monastery. This sophisticated well was built entirely with large bricks of the Ming Dynasty and is accurate in age. More than 70 pieces of stone, pottery, porcelain, iron and other cultural relics were unearthed from J15, and provide important evidence for the study of Grand Bao’en Temple. Especially one stone Buddha head and two stone Buddha statue bricks, both exquisitely carved and decorated, were ornaments on the famous Nanjing Porcelain Pagoda of the Temple, reflecting the characteristics of the imperial monastery at that epoch.
