摘要
美艺公司成立时间约在1904、1905年间,S. J.希克斯和A. Ll.泰勒是公司的共同创办人,主营业务是制售家具和室内装饰。1954年5月美艺公司歇业,结束了它在上海长达半个世纪的运营。在旧上海制售西式家具的多家外商中,以美艺公司最为当时人所熟知,邵洵美的文学作品中就多次提及这家公司。现在上海一些知名建筑中也还保有该公司作品。现有文本对美艺公司的叙述都比较简单、琐碎,与它昔日的声名与影响不相称;故本文综合档案、历史报刊等各种文献,努力廓清其始末情形。
Arts&Crafts Furnishing Co.,Ltd.,founded in 1904 or 1905 by S.J.Hicks and A.Ll.Taylor,was engaged in manufacture and sales of furniture and interior decorations.The company was out of business in May 1954,marking the end of its operations for half a century in Shanghai.It stood out of those Western-style furniture makers in the old Shanghai,and is often mentioned in writings of Shao Xunmei.Its works can still be found in some of the famous buildings in this city.Considering the simple and trivial introduction to it in existing materials which is far from well demonstrating its fame and influence in those days,this paper strives to give a clear and accurate description of it with the help of archives,newspapers and periodicals in the past and all kinds of other literatures.
