As the most distinguished cultural existence and emotional attachment to their homeland,Chinese New Year serves to transmit the Chinese diaspora’s sense of belonging.Since 1896,as an important presentation of Chineseness, celebrating Chinese New Year has become an inseparable part of Chinese culture and social life in Newfoundland, and has been well recognized by the local general public.Through New Year’s celebrations and a variety of other cultural practices,Chinese in Newfoundland continuously rediscover, negotiate and re-conceptualize their understandings of Chineseness,as response to the socio-historic changes in North America. In this process, this particular Chinese diasporic group creatively reshapes and integrates the ethnic and the vernacular traditions so that constructing a new selfawareness and cultural identity. In this sense, this new culture which emerges in the interplay between ethnic tradition and local knowledge, plausibly suggests the possibility of constructing a cross-racial/ethnic/cultural shared community. This article therefore provides a new theoretical and practical lens for ethnic studies in the context of multiculturalism.
