摘要
由英国汉学家亨利·麦克里维在其著作《黑旗军在越南》中对刘永福抗法的叙述,归纳出亨利·麦克里维对刘永福持如下观点:由于当时社会历史环境极其复杂,不该苛求其抗法须持高大上的目的。刘永福抗法只能是出于一种最为朴素的动机,此外就是听从清廷的和顺化指令。没必要苛求他抗法须有很高觉悟。刘永福的抗法行为更多是出于道义而非职责,这足以让他无愧于英雄的称号。
Henry McAleavy,a British sinologist,gives an account of Liu Yongfu’s resistance against French Army in his book Black Flags in Vietnam,and the followings have been summed up:Liu Yongfu was born poor,and the social and historical environment is extremely complicated in those days,so his purposes of resisting against the French should not be judged too harshly.In fact,his resistance can only be out of a most simple motivation,namely:to survive and to seek self-development.What’s more,he must obey orders from the Qing government and the court of Hue.Most important,it is not Liu Yongfu who can control the result of the anti-French War,and therefore it is not necessary to be strict with him about whether his anti-French consciousness is noble or not.Beginning his military career as an outlaw,and getting retired to return home in the end,Liu Yongfu's resisting against the French seems more out of morality and justice than of responsibility,which is enough for him to be worthy of the title of a hero.
