"更"是时间单位,用于计量海船航程。"更"的引用与火长的工作环境密切相关,一昼夜为十更。"一更六十里"的含义是,在"好风"条件下海船1更时间可航行60里的距离。更数随航速的变化而变化,不存在一个固定对应的里程数。"定更法"是以实测风速推算航行时间的方法。根据渔业生产的需要,南海《更路簿》在使用上相对于其他海区的海道针经有所简化。计量航海实质还是经验航海,无法做到绝对的"数字化"。火长的经验起着重要作用,其精髓在于根据实际情况进行变化。
“Geng”is a time unit,used to calculate the voyage distance by ocean-going vessels.The quotation of“Geng”is closely related to the working environment of the pilot,and one day and night is equal to ten“Geng”.“One‘Geng’with 30 miles”is defined as that an ocean-going vessel can sail 30 miles in one“Geng”with favorable wind condition.The number of“Geng”varies with ship’s speed,and there is no fixed distance corresponding to one“Geng”.The method to determine“Geng”is to estimate hours underway with real wind speed.According to the need of the fishery production,Genglubu is a simplified version application,compared with the Guides to Sailing Directions for other sea waters.Metering navigation,in fact,is still empirical navigation,and the absolute quantitative navigation cannot be achieved.The experience of the pilot is of great importance,as the pilot’s reactive response varies in response to the real situation.
