Last month, the Los Angeles Opera presented Christoph Willibald Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydic e in conjunction with Chicago's Joffrey Ballet at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Conductor James Conlon led the modern orchestra in Gluck's music with magnificent results. A conductor who specialized in performing in 18 th-century style on period instruments might have created a leaner sound, but Conlon's meaty tones fit this production's combination of old and new perfectly.
