The Sound and the Fury and A Streetcar Named Desire are William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams’s representative works respectively. Both of them describe the wane of a family, but about different characters. Quentin in the Sound and the Fury and Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire, who are seen as the representatives of gentlemen and gentlewomen in the south of America, have the same characteristics. They are the representatives of the southern civilization in America,so their life destinations also show the track and destiny of the south when confronting the northern industrialism. This paper reveals the tragic characteristics of these two people through analyzing the three common features. The tragic life of these two quixotic people also implies that the old systems and civilization of the southern America will collapse when fighting against the new and strong northern industrial civilization.
