Criticism of the English Metaphysical Poets has largely been focused on their arts rather than their social connections. Though the insights of the feminist and poet-colonialist criticism, two power discourses may be found working behind John Donne's art: one of male-chauvinism and the other of colonialism. These two discourses, though unconsciously expressed, are closely related to the poet's life experience and his contemporary society. The Metaphysical Poets, in fact, participated either consciously or sciously with the colonialists in constructing their textual world of the 'others'.
