摘要
学界通常认为,"狄"和"翟"是由狄族名称音译而来,白狄和赤狄的名称与狄族自身信仰有关。考之殷商、西周和春秋早期史料可知:狄族多以"狄"名之,且不带有蔑称的含义;"狄"与"翟"并不互通,"狄"与"翟"假借实是战国及战国以后之事;白狄和赤狄之所以冠之以白、赤应是区别其族属,指示其所处地理方位而已,与自身民族信仰无关。
It is generally recognized by scholars that＂di＂and＂zhai＂are the transliteration of the name of the nationality of＂Di＂. The naming of＂Bai Di＂and＂Chi Di＂is believed to be related to the beliefs of the na tionality of＂Di＂. The analysis on the historical materials of the Shang, Western Zhou and the Early Spring and Autumn Period shows that many names of the nationality of＂Di＂contain the word＂di＂and it does not have the contemptuous meaning. ＂Di＂and＂zhai＂are not synonyms. It is also found that＂bai＂and＂chi＂are the symbol of different branches of the nationality, showing only the geographical location and having nothing to do with the national beliefs.
