Long Day's Journey into Night is Eugene O'Neill's autobiographical four-act play written in the 20th century about tragic life and metal sufferings of the Tyrone's family. This paper explores the play from the perspective of performativity by close-reading of the text, indicating how the characters in Long Day 's Journey into Night theatricalize the Self behind invisible masks, textualize the Self in (re)citing texts, and ritualize the Self in recurring past memories. All the characters try to construct themselves by performing the Self and the theatrical performance turns out to be the only purpose of living for the characters. The performance of the Self reflects the broken world and alienated soul of modem Americans, and expresses the universal performativity of identity.
