How the practice of daily singing affects human action, gives meaning to action, shapes generational differences, and how cultural identity conversely influences the practice of daily singing- these are the research foci of this paper. This research compares daily singing and cultural identity of four developmental stages of M alaysian Chinese: elder, middle- aged, youth and children. The study examines the generational differences in daily singing and cultural identity of M alaysian Chinese and explores the correlation betw een these two factors. This paper presents in the vertical historical times a relatively complete flow and pattern of daily singing and cultural identity of elder M alaysian Chinese; and also discusses contemporary cultural identity theories in the framew ork of interpretation which is mediated by consciousness, emotion and cognition.
