摘要

Sarah Waters focused on the themes of genders, sexes and class differences within the historical background. ＂The Paying Guests＂ reflects the shattered boundaries between upper and lower classes, and the anxiety and bewilderment of social transitions after World War I. In order to survive the hard times, Frances Wray has to rent out her house to the working class couple Leonard and Lilian Barber. Frances and Lillian Barber＇s romance and conspiracy to murder become the miniature of the social class conflicts and the collapse of post - war hierarchy.
