Taiping Guangji , or Extensive Records of the Taiping Era, one of the four great books of early Song Dynasty, carries rich religious thoughts. Analysis of its description of alchemists, its circulation among the folks, values, and religious differences lead to the truth that, compared with the predecessors of the Qin and Han dynasties, the alchemists in the Sui and Tang dynasties and the period of the Five Dynasties are rarely involved in the politics or royal courts, and the people they contact are the folks and the social grassroots. They hide their talents, and try to avoid sensationalism, neither seeking to be creators and nor organizing social groups. They neither seek to be immortal or distinguished, nor try to use their skills for wealth or fame. The pursuit of longevity has faded from their mind, and their very identity is marginalized people. In politics, there is nothing to be done, and thus they turn to secularization. A glimpse can be caught of the change of the Tang and Song dynasties, the transformation of traditional beliefs of the folks and the status of the Tang alchemists.
