Leonard Bernstein （1918-1990） was called a ＂total musician＂ for his contribution to the music world as composer, performer, conductor, and educator at once. Among his many compositions across multiple genres in both serious art music and popular styles, West Side Story was often considered his most compelling work. The article examines the historical and societal context in which the musical appeared, positioning the reader in great details of creation, performance, and reception of the show, and gives readers in the century beyond his life a deeper understanding of the creative work of the iconic musician.
