Because of its unique form and religious connotation, Taoist ritual robe is the costume of worship, rites and ceremonies of various schools of Taoism, and it is a concrete embodiment of the "Huang-Lao thought" of the Spring and Autumn Period. It incorporates Confucianism, Buddhism, yin-yang, and folk worship to make it secular and then consistent with the Taoist doctrine of public preaching. In order to summarize the composition and decorative features of Taoist Priest's Robes during the Qing dynasty and the Republic of China(1644~1949), this essay explores the cultural connotations and ritual meanings of 20 Taoist Priest's Robes from the collections of Wudang Museum, Beijing Bai Yun Guan, museums, and private collectors. This paper focuses on the layout, decorative patterns and embroidery design of Wudang Taoist Priest's Robes(He Chang and Sleeved Robe), among which enriches hemispherical dome cosmology and unique ornamental distribution rule. The authors argue that the layout and embroidery design of Wudang Taoist Priest's Robes embody philosophy of "Tao gave birth to the One; the One gave birth successively to two things, three things, up to ten thousand. " and the pattern design regulation, "interactions between heaven and mankind; Dao models itself after nature ", of Taoist priests' costumes.
