"The highest good?is like?water" is a metaphorical expression, which is raised in chapter eight of Lao Tzu. It is also stated that "(water is) so near to Tao". The whole chapter discusses seven traits that "water" and "Tao" have in common:men think the ground the best place for building a house upon; among thoughts they value those that are profound; in friendshipthey value gentleness; in words, truth; in government, good order; in deeds, effectiveness; in actions, timeliness." These terms are generally used to signify characteristics of "people" and are the particular descriptions of "Tao". However, the mere textual analysis cannot explain how "water" possesses and represents these traits. Therefore, the metaphorical mechanism and thinking process from the source domain of "water" to its target domain of "Tao" are mainly discussed in this thesis.
