The gender concept in A Dream of Red Mansions can be summed up by what Jia Baoyu said:girls' flesh and blood is made of water and boys' of mud. The equality between men and women and the concept of women superior to men can be found throughout the whole novel. The ideological source can be traced to I Ching: the terms like a lake on the top of a mountain, and men's respect of women for a better marriage can be found in Hexagram Xian. The concepts of I Ching has a great influence ever since it came into being, and Cao Xueqin was much interested in I Ching and let out the notion of "water and mud" by the mouth of Jia Baoyu.
