This paper discusses the features and functions of archaeological remains related to bronze casting in the Shang and Zhou dynasties, including working surfaces, pits, trenches, kilns and furnaces used in the process of mold making, copper melting, casting and trimming. Rectangular houses with single or double rooms are common structures of workshops. Working surfaces are usually well built with lime or burnt soil and with traces of repair and maintenance. Archaeological remains like rusted bronze and bronze slag are usually discovered around. Pillars and holes found on work surfaces might be used for holding up crucibles. Compared with pottery kilns, kilns used for mold firing usually have simple structures without a separate fireplace, which should be connected with the low temperature required by mold firing.
