CD20 is an activated-glycosylated phosphoprotein expressed on the surface of all B cells beginning at the pro-B phase and progressively increasing in concentration until maturity, and it is putative as a B-cell marker for its lack of expression on other cell lineages. However, recent studies have showed that a subset of CD3~+T cells expressing CD20 has been identified, and this CD3~+CD20~+T-cell subset not only displays a similar and unique biological characteristic to classical CD3~+T cells, but also plays an important role in many diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and ovarian cancer. Here, we provide an overview of the current knowledge about the phenotype and functional features of CD3~+CD20~+T cells as well as their roles in different diseases.
