The Chu king mausoleum excavated in 1995 at Shizishan, Xuzhou, Jiangsu produced an intricate and beautiful lacquer coffin inlaid with jade. However, at the time of excavation the jade-inlaid lacquer tomb had already broken into many pieces. The jade pieces were determined to be inlaid throughout the coffin by researchers. This reconstruction is not accurate. By analyzing the state of the coffin upon excavation and comparing it with recently excavated Han tombs of similar shape, construction, and function, the author argues that the so called jade inlays are actually jade ornaments from inside the coffin.
