Set forth by American poet Carolyn Forch6 in 1981, "Poetry of Witness" as a literary concept has secured itself as the latest trend of American poetry in the 21st century by stressing social engagement and political value of poetry. It proposes that poetry assume the social responsibilities of witnessing and documenting major historical and social events by capturing the perplexities and introspections of individuals and institutions in conditions of extremity. Based on the scrutiny of a considerable number of major anthologies of American poetry particularly published since the New Millennium, this paper attempts to explore from both longitudinal and horizontal perspectives the dynamics of this body of American poetry, including its genesis, subject matter and social significance, aesthetic strategies, and the challenges it is now facing with.
