摘要
苏格兰女作家面对着民族问题和性别问题的双重裹挟,写作往往带有双重的边缘化特征,詹尼斯·加洛韦在代表作《窍门是保持呼吸》中则借助空白、数字和排版样式等各种形式符号建构了小说文本的多重意义维度,在书写女性边缘身份的同时对于边缘与主流进行了动态化的关系重构。本文通过分析该小说中不同类型的形式符号,结合女主人公的创伤经历,探讨其中蕴含的话语策略和意义,指出加洛韦利用形式符号书写将性别问题提到和民族身份问题一样的高度,在表现当代苏格兰中下层女性的境遇的同时丰富了英语写作的既有框架。
Simultaneously confronted with issues of nationalism and gender, Scottish women writers often grapple with double marginalization in their writings. Janice Galloway in her novel The Trick Is to Keep Breathing makes use of various formal symbols like blank, numbers and typography to complicate the meaning of the text by reconstructing a flexible margin-center relation while portraying the marginalized condition of women. This essay discusses the different types of formal symbols, in view of the heroine＇s traumatic experience, to explore the novel＇s discourse strategy and significance. These formal symbols enable Galloway to discuss gender issues alongside nationalism,and her attempt to represent the contemporary situation of the middle and lower-class Scottish women also enriches the paradigm of English writings.
