March 3rd Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. Its name and some of the customs were introduced into ancient Japan and gradually the customs merged with Japanese customs and were passed down to the present. The contents and meaning of the festival originated from people's offering sacrifices to Gaomei, a God. The festival is closely related with giving birth, begging for infant and welcoming resurgence of life. The custom of the festival in Japan has something in common with Chinese custom in driving away evils, disasters and, protecting life. But they are quite different in manifestation. The Chinese custom mainly intends to express call and welcome for life, Japanese custom, however, mainly expresses the idea of driving out disaster in order to protect life.
