The Cemetery of Matteo Ricci [and Other Foreign Missionaries] is a landmark that symbolizes the Sino-Westem cultural exchange and mutual learning during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The initial history of the early Cemetery is still fairly obscure so far. The combinative research of historical materials in Western languages such as diary of Sabatino de Ursis, the correspondences among Jesuits, annual letters, etc. and records in Chinese may restore the history of the Cemetery in its first seven years (ca. 1610-1620), and it will be of great significance to interpret the relationship between the meaning of those activities for carrying on the cultural accommodation strategy as before after Matteo Ricci,s death and the Ceretery in the Chinese Catholic history and the history of Sino-Western cultural exchange.
