Objective To observe the efficacy and safety of joint application of intense pulsed light (IPL) and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) in treating Erythromelanosis follicularis faciei et colli (EFFC). Methods Totally 57 patients with EFFC were divided randomly into two groups: Group A (29 cases) and Group B (28 cases ). The patients in Group A were treated with AHAs once every three weeks 4 times in total and IPL 540 nm once each month. The patients in Group B were given only IPL and the course was the same as that of Group A. The clinical efficacy and safety of two groups were observed respectively after twice and 4 times of treatment. Results The efficacy of Group A reached 65.5 % and 86. 2% after twice and 4 times of treatment respectively, while that of Group B being 46.4% and 60. 7% respectively. As to total efficacy rate, the difference between two groups after twice of treatment was not sta- tistically significant ( P 〉 0. 05 ), but remarkable ( P 〈 0.05 ) after four times of the treatment. Adverse reactions occurred to 5 patients in Group A and 2 patients in Group B and the difference between two groups was not statistically significant (P 〉 0. 05). Recurrence of EFFC or occurrence of secondary adverse reactions was observed in neither group during the follow-up performed I month after the treat- ment. Conclusions Featuring good efficacy and less adverse reaction, combined application of IPL and AHAs will reduce the number as well as cost of the treatment of EFFC.
